What We Believe

The Lutheran movement began in 1517 when Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany calling for the correction of errors in the medieval church.  Lutheranism teaches that a person is saved only by the grace of God through the Holy Spirit and faith in Jesus Christ.  The Lutheran Church acknowledges Jesus as Lord and Savior and the Bible as revealing God's will.  Holy Baptism and Holy Communion (the Lord's Supper) are the two sacraments - sacred acts of Christ, giving grace - that Lutherans celebrate.  Lutherans are a community of people that gather regularly to baptize, commune, and speak the word of God, then go forth to spread the Good News of God's love and to serve others.

In Christ to grow and serve.  (the one line welcome)

Holy Cross History

Organized in 1960, Holy Cross is people who are formed into a congregation of the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran church in America (ELCA).  It has grown from a group of 160 people, first worshipping in the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Scott Street, to a thriving congregation of 775 baptized members.

The 4+ acres of property on Mocho St. were purchased in 1961 for $25,000, with the original church building constructed in 1963.  This was used as the main sanctuary until 1981 when the current worship area was completed.  From the fall of 1995 through the spring of 1996 the new education building and expanded administrative wing were constructed.  The three-manual two-rank Rodgers Pipe Organ was installed in 1988.

Holy Cross is a congregation made up of people of all ages - people who have committed themselves to an action-oriented ministry in the name of Jesus Christ throughout the community.

The Holy Cross web site was established in July 1999 at its current address.  A small informational web site had been set up about a year prior, but without its own domain name.
