Construction of the Original Sanctuary in 1962-63
Holy Cross Lutheran Church was formed in 1960, and met at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Scott Street. In 1961 the 160 or so members of Holy Cross purchased about 4 acres of property for $25,000 on their way to their mission of building their own church. The property was occupied by two houses and several other buildings. All of the buildings were removed to make way for the church construction except for one of the houses, which was retained for use as classrooms, etc. The other house and some of the barns were burned, with the fire department using them for practice.
Much of the construction was done by members of the church, as can be seen in the photos. In addition, the spire, the sanctuary light fixtures, and the metal artwork behind the altar were all made by members.
We have 163 slides from 1961 through 1967. Most are of the construction of the original church sanctuary. The slides have all be scanned, and 89 of them are included here, on 20 web pages.
A 6 classroom education building was added in 1967 behind the sanctuary. A few photos are included of it here, but unfortunately we have located photos of its construction. It was in this building that our pre-school had its beginnings.
In 1981 we constructed a new sanctuary, and in 1995-96 added a second education building, music room, and office space. Photos of this construction will follow.
Today the original sanctuary serves us well as our parish hall, which is used for youth events, meetings, scouts, dinners, and a variety of other purposes.
The following photo sets celebrate our original building and the people with a vision who gave their resources of time, sweat, know-how, and money to construct it to the Glory of God and of our Savior Jesus Christ.
